Scaling Renewable Energy at Home

For this customer, investing in renewable energy was never a one-off decision, it was a long-term vision for complete self-sufficiency. As a returning customer of The Natural Energy Company, their energy journey began in 2023 with the installation of an air-to-air heat pump. But that was only the start.

Over the course of two years, they worked closely with our team to scale up their system, ultimately installing 35kW of solar PV and 9 Tesla Powerwall 2 batteries, transforming their property into a powerhouse of renewable generation, storage and resilience.

A Phased Approach to Energy Independence

This was a highly technical, multi-phase project. In Phase 1, the customer installed 4 Tesla Powerwall 2 units, enabling a significant degree of energy storage and backup capacity. In Phase 2, we added 5 more Powerwalls, bringing the total to 9 batteries, a system capable of storing over 120kWh of electricity.

The scale of this installation required a full electrical infrastructure upgrade. Working in coordination with SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks), the customer commissioned a new transmission line and dedicated transformer to ensure the system could operate safely and efficiently in line with grid requirements.

Restoring the Past, Powering the Future

The customer’s ambitions don’t stop at solar. As part of their broader sustainability goals, they also restored an old water wheel on their property, with future plans to generate power and heat from hydro energy. It’s a rare and inspiring blend of traditional engineering and modern renewable technologies, all designed to reduce reliance on the grid and utilise the natural resources available on their land.

The final stage of the project, a 35kW PV system, was completed in April 2025, marking the end of a carefully planned journey toward true energy independence.

A Lasting Partnership

The Natural Energy Company has worked with this customer throughout this evolving project, from heat pump installation to the full design and delivery of their solar and battery system. Our role involved not only system installation but also detailed coordination with network operators and engineers, ensuring all aspects of the system met regulatory, safety and performance standards.

With one of the most advanced private home storage systems in Scotland and future hydro integration in sight, this customer’s home now stands as a shining example of what’s possible when long-term vision meets expert support.
